D-B EXCEL Honored for Excellence in Education Program

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Dobyns-Bennett EXCEL (Excellence in a Creative Environment for Learning), a virtual and blended-learning program offered by Dobyns-Bennett High School, has recently been awarded the 2018 Award for Excellence in Education Program by the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) at the annual TSBA convention.

"To have D-B EXCEL recognized as the 2018 winner of the Award for Excellence in Education Program is a tremendous honor, and truly reflective of the outstanding efforts of the DBE students and staff," said KCS Superintendent Dr. Jeff Moorhouse. "Being able to provide an innovative and individualized learning pathway for our students is a key mission for KCS, and to have TSBA recognize DBE in this way is an outstanding accomplishment."

A STEM Designation School, recognized through the Tennessee Department of Education and the Tennessee STEM Innovation Network, the curriculum encompasses STEM education, virtual, blended and project-based learning. This approach provides D-B EXCEL students a personalized, smaller academic environment which encourages and empowers students to focus on individualized goals. Virtual classes allow students more options in their learning path and provides the versatility to work at a personalized pace. Blended learning provides a more practical, hands-on education experience and an opportunity to build meaningful connections with teachers, other students, the community and the region.

D-B EXCEL Principal Shanna Hensley echoed a similar excitement at the program’s latest accomplishment, stating, “I am especially proud of what this accomplishment represents.” The DBE teachers and staff, according to Hensley, “deserve all of the credit for creating a unique learning environment that has proven successful through individualizing a curriculum that also incorporates community projects.”

As a program of Dobyns-Bennett, D-B EXCEL students can also take classes on the main campus (KCS transportation is provided between locations), participate in student clubs, extracurricular activities (including band and athletics), and participate in the Dobyns-Bennett graduation ceremony, receiving a Dobyns-Bennett diploma.

On Thursday, December 13, 2018, D-B EXCEL will host a STEM/Project-Based Learning Showcase Night where current students will showcase their projects and STEM related work to parents/guardians, community members and potential students interested in enrolling.
