Professional Learning

Professional Learning for KCS Faculty & Staff

The Professional Learning Vision of Kingsport City Schools is framed within our guiding tenets, specifically the Core Values, Goals, Core Competencies, and Key Practices. Our professional learning efforts are inclusive of all Kingsport City School employees and focus on the four areas of Induction/Mentoring, Continuous Learning, Professional Learning Communities, and Succession Planning. The four focus areas provide the major work of every department, is cyclical, and in constant refinement.  Initial large scale and broad based learning may take place at the district level and then shifts to the implementation phase of learning. Implementation of new learning and continuous learning is situated within the schools and teams through job embedded approaches such as professional learning communities and the support of administrators and instructional design specialists. The multi-layered approach to professional learning allows for appropriate implementation expectations with the necessary feedback, reflection, refinement, and follow-through for the application of new learning model.

Kingsport City Schools is excited to bring the EdCamp “unconference” experience to East Tennessee.
Anyone interested in education is welcome to attend.  EdCamps are professional learning opportunities that are created by teachers for teachers, but all people who are stakeholders in education are welcome.  EdCamps provide a pathway for dynamic conversations with dedicated educators, relevant sessions created and led by participants and cutting edge pedagogy that will inspire and motivate.
If you are a teacher, administrator, education student, or simply someone with a genuine interest in teaching and learning,
please join us for a day filled with limitless opportunities for acquiring knowledge!

Dear Colleagues,

As you know, from April 17 through May 5, 2017, Tennessee students will take TNReady, our new end-of-year assessments in English language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science. As our students are approaching the administration window, the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE), in partnership with the new state testing vendor Questar, the Expect More, Achieve More Coalition, and Kingsport City Schools, will be hosting a professional development event to help teachers prepare for TNReady.

The purpose of this gathering is to answer questions that Tennessee educators have about TNReady, and to provide detailed information about the 2016-17 TNReady test, test administration, and the release of score reports in the fall. We will also share resources to help educators answer parent questions about the tests and support students as they are getting ready for the assessments.

The professional development event will be on Monday, March 13 at Kingsport City Schools from 5:00-6:15 PM.  Refreshments will be provided.

We are eager to hear your questions about TNReady, and we encourage you to fill out our brief survey ahead of the town hall. Your responses will be confidential, but will allow us to ensure your questions are answered and to structure the meeting in a way that is beneficial to all attendees.

If you are planning to attend, please register here.

We look forward to seeing you on March 13th!

Best regards,

Lyle Ailshie

Kingsport City Schools is excited to offer a professional networking opportunity for district leaders from across the region. The Summit is structured around three questions:
  • How do we create a plan for where we want to go?
  • How do we lead the work in a school?
  • How do we engage the community and keep the focus on students?
Principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, coordinators, supervisors, and directors from across the region will join together to expand their knowledge of how strategic planning and leadership practices influence district decisions. Participants will explore strategies for achieving district goals and how strategic planning and visioning processes can be implemented to foster organizational change. The event will include opportunities to explore examples of strategic planning, visioning, implementing change processes, and assessing current levels of work. Special breakout sessions to support planning for next steps, coordinating and developing community partnerships, and networking with colleagues in similar leadership positions will also be included.

Professional Learning

Needs Assessment

What does this look like in your department?

Who is responsible for facilitating or organizing?

How does this look in a typical day/month/year?  Is it in-person, online, blended?  Is there an expense attached to the process?

When and how often is the process carried out?

How does the process align with school or district goals/guiding tenets?

Induction/Mentoring

Continuous Learning

PLC/Collaboration

Succession Planning

The Professional Learning Visioning Team has determined four areas of focus for Professional Learning Needs.  Please answer the questions (not all-inclusive as you can add additional information as it helps each department plan) and identify areas of strength in which to celebrate.  Then, please determine an area where there has been a gap identified and determine an action plan to address the identified gap.   Please include in the action plan the timeline for planning, learning, implementation, reflection, and refinement.
Please contact Dr. Stephanie Potter, Director of Professional Learning at (423) 378.5193 or spotter@k12k.com with questions regarding Professional Learning and/or New Teacher Resources.
The webinar also contains information regarding Professional Development Points (PDPs).
