Tile Press Molds

Advanced pottery students create a plaster mold of a clay tile for reproduction.

Students create an original tile in clay. A wood form is constructed around the tile on a piece of Plexiglas.  The form is clamped together and fresh clay is used to seal the cracks and edges. A release agent is applied to the tile, the form and the glass and plaster is mixed and poured into the form. After the plaster had set up, the mold may be used to press a series of identical pieces.  The beauty is that each tile can then be alter to be unique through additive or subtractive processes.
