OBJECTIVES:

This course is designed to give students necessary practice in spoken and written French with emphasis on the more difficult French grammatical construction.   French III is an intermediate course offering review and expansion of grammar and vocabulary learned in French I and French II with an emphasis on communication and application of knowledge in functional life situations.  Students will continue to develop their understanding of the French language that began in introductory levels.   They will understand vocabulary, grammar and syntax at a more advanced level in order to use it in practical communication aurally, orally, and in writing.   MOST OF ALL, to enable students to learn the information and gain the confidence necessary to be able to SPEAK and WRITE the foreign language being studied at a higher level of skill than when they began the class.  This may be difficult at first, but don't be shy, and don't worry about making mistakes. This is part of the language learning process.  Class will be taught primarily in French and students are expected to speak in French as well.

 

OUTCOMES:

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Communicate effectively and with increasing accuracy, both orally and in writing, on a variety of topics using new vocabulary.
  • Think critically about the target culture as well as their own and contrast the two.
  • Understand and follow instructions given in French.
  • Recognize similarities/differences between the target language and the mother tongue.
  • Apply grammar and pronunciation rules to new vocabulary.
  • Read and understand a variety of authentic texts (e.g. letters, short stories, magazine articles, and short novels) with increasing fluency and accuracy.
  • Watch/listen to video clips of French speaking people around the world; use context and visual cues to deduce meanings of new words.
  • Use a dictionary efficiently to research new words.
  • Deduce the meanings of new words from visual contexts.
  • Recognize regional variations in speech, cultural diversity, and varying points of views.

 

GRADES:

1.  85% of the graded material will directly represent mastery, while no more than 15% will reflect homework, class activities, and/or participation.

2. For six weeks grades, tests will carry twice the weight of quizzes.

3.   Grades will be averaged to determine mastery of referenced standards.

4.   Late work will be accepted according to the teacher announced deadlines with a

     penalty.

5.   Group work will be graded when appropriate with individual participation accounted 

     for within the specific rubric.

6.   Make up assignments (tests, essays, quizzes, projects, etc.) are the responsibility of the student.

Upon missing class for any reason, the student should check the Class Log to obtain

 missed work, in advance if possible.

7.   Tests may be retaken one time.   Students will have one week from the date the test is returned to re-take the test.  The test will be

similar in skills, but may not be the same test.  The better grade stands.

8.   The final examination will be a comprehensive assessment of the student’s language skills.  The student will perform during as many as three class periods at the end of the semester prior to and including the scheduled examination period.  The student’s grade for the examination will be an average of the performances.

  As the semester grade, the student will receive the higher of:

1. His/her six weeks and exam average OR

2. The final exam grade

 

***If a student cheats, the teacher will call their parents and the student will be referred to the principal.  The student will be allowed to retake a similar test/activity.

 

 

 Please realize that it is imperative for you to start studying and memorizing vocabulary from the very first day.  Even if you don’t have any homework assigned, you always have vocabulary that needs to be learned.  This requires discipline and motivation on your part.  Please don’t fall behind!
