Half-Life
The time it takes for half of the atoms of a substance to decay.

1)  The half-life of technetium-99 is 6 hours.  What mass of Tc-99 remains from a 10.0 g sample after 18 hours?
2)  A radioactive isotope decays from 8 . 00 g to .25 g in 30 days.  What is the isotopes half-life?

Answers:
1)  18hrs/6hrs = 3 half-lives     10g/2 = 5g     5g/2 = 2.5g    2.5g/2 = 1. 25g
2)  8g/2 = 4g    4g/2 = 2g    2g/2 = 1g   1g/2 = .5g   .5g/2 = .25g      The isotope underwent 5 half-lives.    30 days/5 = 6    The isotopes half-life is 6 days.
