KCS Summer Learning Experience

June 1 - July 1, 2021
Rising 1st - 8th Graders Only
For the 2021 Summer, Kingsport City School (KCS) is offering families the option of sending their students to their zoned school* for an in-person learning camp designed to boost learning in math, reading, and STEM. The purpose of the information on this page, is to review the procedures and expectations for families who choose Summer Learning through Kingsport City Schools for summer 2021. The KCS Summer Learning Experience is open to all KCS students enrolled in KCS - including regular school year tuition students at no charge.
*Note that all Robinson Middle School and all Sevier Middle School students will attend KCS Summer Learning Experience at Sevier Middle School. Kingsport Parks & Recreation will host their community camps at Robinson Middle School. There will be no KCS Summer Learning Experience activities held at Robinson.

Despite the diligent efforts by our teachers and staff during the 2020-2021 school year, our students have experienced disruptions to their learning experiences due to COVID-19. While KCS students have experienced face-to-face learning to a much greater extent than other students across Tennessee (and the USA), additional learning time this summer is essential to accelerate their academic growth and ensure that all students have the opportunity to reach their goals and dreams.

Students in grades K-8 who register for and attend the KCS Summer Learning Experience will be exposed to new learning in math, reading, related arts, and STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Art, and Math). If there are skills and concepts they missed during the regular year, they will have the opportunity to learn those before going on to the next grade.

The KCS Summer Learning Experience will run for twenty (20) days with the first day on Tuesday, June 1, 2021 and the last day will be on Thursday, July 1, 2021. Note that the first week is Tuesday - Friday while the other four weeks are Monday - Thursday.

The daily schedule varies slightly at each location.  Bus transportation, breakfast and lunch are provided for each student. An after-school care program or child-care is available at most locations.

Students will be most successful in advancing their learning if they attend every day. With limited spots available, we want everyone who wants to maximize their child’s learning experience to have a chance to do so. Please check with your child’s school if there is a planned activity where your child will miss summer learning. Excessive absences may result in your child’s spot being offered to another child on the waiting list.

The core purpose of the 2021 Summer Learning Experience is to accelerate student learning. We may need to assess your child if they did not participate in our benchmark testing or TCAP during the regular school year so we can target specific learning to help them be successful in the fall.

Breakfast and lunch will be served daily at each location. Both meals are free for every student attending the KCS Summer Learning Experience.

School buses will run special routes for the summer. Please contact your child’s school immediately if your child will need transportation to and from school.

After-school programs are offered every day of the Summer Learning Experience at all schools except Washington Elementary and Adams Elementary. Transportation from your child’s school to one of these locations is available. Please register through the YMCA as soon as possible by calling (423) 247.9622.

Kingsport City Schools will provide appropriate services for our special populations of students including those with an IEP, 504, and English Language (EL) learners.

The KCS Summer Learning Experience is FREE to all KCS enrolled students, including those who pay tuition during the regular school year.

Any student work will be used to help them improve their learning and gain knowledge they need to advance successfully in the fall. Any grades on work are used for feedback only so the families can see how their child is progressing.

Students in the KCS Summer Learning Experience can participate in after-school care. For more information, please contact your child’s school before June 1, 2021.
