BOE Work Session Notes - October 22, 2024

The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education held a work session on Tuesday, October 22, 2024.  Several important items were discussed, including:
  • A report from the Kingsport City Schools Education Foundation;
  • The annual KCS Technology report; and
  • An introduction and review of several potential Board Policy revisions to be considered at the Board's November meeting.

Tammie Davis, President of the Kingsport City Schools Education Foundation, presented a report regarding the Foundation's efforts during the past year.
  • The mission of the Foundation is to provide a supplemental source of revenue for projects and initiatives not directly funded through tax dollars from the State of Tennessee or provided in the KCS district budget.
  • The Foundation's focus is to provide one-time funding for projects or initiatives that may be replicated as a best practice throughout the district.
  • Since 2020-21, 25 grants have been awarded by the Foundation, totaling $30,802.64.

Andy Arnold, Chief Technology Officer, presented a report reviewing KCS technology efforts.
  • The department strives to provide safe, secure, and stable technology services to the district, satisfying users in a way that creates trust.
  • The department operates under the "Rule of 300," striving to operate 100% of systems at 100% capacity for 100% of the time.

Dr. Andy True, Assistant Superintendent - Administration, presented several proposed Policy revisions for initial review and consideration.
  • 4.201 - Class Size Ratios
  • 4.213 - Family Life Education
  • 4.301 - Interscholastic Athletics
  • 4.600 - Grading System
  • 4.603 - Promotion and Retention
The reviewed Policies will be considered on first reading at the November Board meeting.
The next session of the Board of Education will be a meeting on Tuesday, November 12, 2024 at 6 p.m.  The meeting will take place in the Tennessee Room of the Administrative Support Center (400 Clinchfield Street).
