Kingsport City Schools Adams Elementary School Makes U.S. News & World Report Best Elementary Schools List

KINGSPORT, TENN. - U.S. News & World Report has published their annual rankings of public elementary schools and John Adams Elementary School has been named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the Best Elementary Schools in Tennessee. Adams Elementary received a silver medal designation in the 2024 Best Schools rankings.

Adams Elementary is ranked in the top 10 percent, listed at #98, of all public elementary schools in Tennessee (out of 1,059). U.S. News & World Report data shows Adams Elementary has a total of 59 percent of students who scored "at or above" the proficient level for mathematics (state: 28%) and 47 percent scored "at or above" the proficient level for reading (state: 28%). "The commitment to learning and academic progress for all students at John Adams Elementary School is exceptional," said Dr. Kelley Harrell, Adams Elementary Principal. "Recognition of this significance wouldn't be possible without the dedication of our students, staff, and families. I am incredibly proud of the success our students have worked hard to earn and can't wait to see all they accomplish in the future!"

In total, 45,236 elementary schools were ranked across the country. The rankings used the same methodology for all included grade levels. For each state, schools were assessed on their shares of students who were proficient or above proficient in their mathematics and reading/language arts state assessments. Half the formula was the results themselves; the other half was the results in the context of socioeconomic demographics; the top-ranked schools are all high achieving and have succeeded at educating all students.

There is no national ranking – but there are distinct elementary rankings calculated at the state and district levels, as well as state rankings specific to charter and magnet schools.
