Inclement Weather Information

Kingsport City Schools understands the importance of communicating news and information to our students, families, faculty and staff. To ensure we are reaching our immediate stakeholders and the Kingsport community, we have several methods of communication to check weather-related changes.

Communications Resources

school messenger (opt-in)

Kingsport City Schools offers a parent/school communication system. An automatic notification will go out to the phone and email contacts for all KCS students in case of an emergency or school closing/delay.  Announcements are typically made by 6 a.m. and mid-day dismissals will be announced immediately to all contact numbers.  Please ensure your child(ren)'s school has the most up-to-date contact information for this service to work efficiently.

Schedule Changes

cancellation or delay of school

The Board of Education and administrators are aware of the hardship that can be caused by an abrupt cancellation. Therefore, school will not be cancelled unless a significant safety risk has been created by unusual circumstances. Schools will be in regular session unless an announcement is made. If you opt-in to SchoolMessenger, our parent/school communication system, you will be automatically notified by 6 a.m. If the schedule is changed, you will hear one of the following announcements beginning at 6 a.m.:
  • Kingsport City Schools will be closed today.
  • Kingsport City Schools will operate on a one-hour delay. (Classes start one hour later than usual and dismiss at the regular time.)
  • Kingsport City Schools will operate on a two-hour delay. (Classes start two hours later than usual and dismiss at the regular time.)
  • Kingsport City School buses will operate on a snow route. (Bus drivers will have already instructed the students where to meet the bus if their street is not passable.)

The school system has the responsibility for deciding to open or close school. This means opening or not opening the buildings and having our employees report for duty. If parents believe that road or weather conditions are dangerous, they may keep their children home. Absences during these circumstances are EXCUSED and the students may make up the work missed.

NOTE: If Kingsport City Schools are closed or dismiss early due to inclement weather, afterschool programs are cancelled as well.

early dismissals

For some emergencies, like snowstorms, school officials will send students home early. You will receive notification through SchoolMessenger, our parent/school communication system. Notifications will also be provided through the school system website at k12k.com and social media channels, the school system radio station WCSK 90.3 FM and other local media outlets.

If there has been an early dismissal and your child has not been picked up, your child’s school will attempt to contact you. Please make sure you provide your school’s front office with the most up-to-date contact information so that we can easily reach you when necessary.

snow routes

In the event of an early dismissal, Kingsport City Schools may use designated Snow Bus Routes to transport students safely. These bus routes will be implemented in the event that roads become treacherous or impassable. Most early dismissals and snow schedules will not utilize snow bus routes. If snow bus routes are used, an announcement will be made on all media outlets, SchoolMessenger and on k12k.com

Please reference the Snow Bus Routes PDF below to learn your child(ren)'s route.

Making the Decision

Below is the system's inclement weather procedures to make the decision on a school schedule change:

  • 3:30 a.m.: Snow Shed calls the KCS Transportation Office regarding road conditions.
  • 4 a.m.: Superintendent of Schools consults with Highway Department, City of Kingsport Road Crews and the KCS Transportation Office regarding road conditions.
  • 4:15 a.m.: Superintendent of Schools, Supervisor of Transportation, Chief Student Services Officer and the Assistant Superintendent - Administration are on the roads checking road conditions, if conditions warrant.
  • 4:55 a.m.: Communications occur based upon road conditions.
  • 5 a.m.: Superintendent of Schools contacts the Weather Bureau.
  • 5:15 - 5:30 a.m.: DECISION. A decision to close/delay school typically will be made by 5:30 a.m. However, road conditions and weather may change rapidly after the decision to remain open is made.  If parents believe that road or weather conditions are dangerous, and school has not been dismissed or cancelled for the day, parents may keep their children at home.
  • 5:30 a.m.: Media (Radio/TV) and Electronic (Website/Social Media) notifications are sent.
  • 5:45 a.m.: SchoolMessenger notifications to employees and parents are sent.
