Kingsport City Schools Robinson Middle School Makes U.S. News & World Report Best Middle Schools List

KINGSPORT, TENN. - U.S. News & World Report has published their annual rankings of public middle schools and Ross N. Robinson Middle School has been named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the Best Middle Schools in Tennessee. Robinson Middle received a silver medal designation in the 2024 Best Schools rankings.

Robinson is ranked in the top 10 percent, listed at #52, of all public middle schools in Tennessee (out of 528). U.S. News & World Report data shows Robinson has a total of 42 percent of students who scored "at or above" the proficient level for mathematics (state: 28%) and 40 percent scored "at or above" the proficient level for reading (state: 28%). Math performance ranking factors and Reading performance ranking factors were described as "Well Above Expectations." Click here for Robinson's ranking data.

"I am pleased that RNR has been honored among the best middle schools in Tennessee," said Dr. Corey Gardenhour, Robinson Middle School Principal. "Our faculty and staff work incredibly hard to ensure our students have quality experiences which will impact them for a lifetime. Special thanks goes to our supportive parents and guardians, community partners, district personnel led by Dr. Hampton and our Board of Education."

In total, 58,431 middle schools were ranked across the country. The rankings used the same methodology for all included grade levels. For each state, schools were assessed on their shares of students who were proficient or above proficient in their mathematics and reading/language arts state assessments. Half the formula was the results themselves; the other half was the results in the context of socioeconomic demographics; the top-ranked schools are all high achieving and have succeeded at educating all students.

There is no national ranking – but there are distinct middle school rankings calculated at the state and district levels, as well as state rankings specific to charter and magnet schools.
