Kingsport City Schools Shedden Awarded National Memorial Award

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - Former Kingsport City Schools (KCS) Supervisor of Maintenance and Custodial Services, Bill Shedden, has been named the 2020 recipient of the Pat Cochrane Memorial Award by the National School Plant Management Association (NSPMA) at the recent annual conference and trade show held in Myrtle Beach, SC. Shedden retired from KCS in December 2019.

Each year, the award is given to the person in the association who exhibits strong leadership skills, a true passion, and a vision for K-12 facilities throughout the United States. Cochrane was a former board member of the NSPMA who strived to make the association a leader in K-12 facilities.

Shedden received the National School Plant Manager of the Year Award in 2013, while making Hawkins County Schools the first school system in Tennessee to install solar panels on 20 school properties, and received and utilized the revenue to assist in improving the school system.  He received the Tennessee School Plant Manager of the Year Award in 2018-2019 for his energy management savings and leadership for Kingsport City Schools. Shedden is the first person in the state of Tennessee to be the recipient of the two National Awards, and the state award.

"These awards would not be possible without the hard work and dedication from the staff I supervised and the support of the school administration,” said Shedden. He served as President of the Tennessee School Plant Management Association for four consecutive years, 2015-2018, and served on the Board of Directors for 10 years. He also served on the Board of Directors for the NSPMA for three years, 2011-2013.

Through the last 23 years, the NSPMA has provided leadership, resources, and collaboration opportunities for school facility directors in all 50 states.
