Dobyns-Bennett High School Graduates Recognized by the National Speech & Debate Association

KINGSPORT, TENN. – Four Dobyns-Bennett High School graduates (May 2025) have earned the prestigious Academic All American Award from the National Speech & Debate Association. This year's recipients are Michael Fanning, Lydia Hurst, Abby-Jay Jardines, and Camryn Sims.

The Academic All American Award recognizes students who have demonstrated academic excellence, competitive success in speech and debate, and outstanding character and leadership. Out of more than 141,000 student members nationwide, fewer than one percent receive this honor each year.

"Earning recognition through the National Speech & Debate Association is quite an honor," said Dobyns-Bennett High School Principal Dr. Brian Tate. "Abby-Jay, Camryn, Lydia, and Michael have worked hard to excel in their craft, and the faculty and staff commend them for this outstanding achievement and wish them the best in their future endeavors."

Participation in speech and debate equips students with vital life skills by enhancing communication, reading, writing, and critical thinking, while also developing interpersonal abilities and preparing them for success in college, career, and beyond.
