Dobyns-Bennett High School's DeBusk Named TSSAA District I Athletic Director of the Year

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Frankie DeBusk, Athletic Director at Dobyns-Bennett High School, has been named the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) A.F. Bridges District I Athletic Director of the Year.

DeBusk has a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in coaching and athletic administration. In his role as Athletic Director at Dobyns-Bennett he oversees, coordinates, and directs all athletic programming for the school.

"Dobyns-Bennett High School is immensely proud of Coach DebBusk and his representation of our institution," said Dobyns-Bennett High School Principal Dr. Brian Tate. "This recognition is expected, given his consistent and diligent efforts to ensure students, athletic teams, the school, and the community are supported and reflected in a positive light."

Before moving into high school athletics, DeBusk spent 18 years at Tusculum University, serving as head football coach from 1998–2015 and as both head coach and athletic director from 2007–2015. He remains the winningest football coach in Tusculum history, leading the Pioneers from the NAIA to NCAA Division II competition and guiding them to a school-record 96 wins, two South Atlantic Conference championships, and an NCAA Playoffs appearance. As Tusculum’s AD, DeBusk oversaw one of the most successful eras in the university’s athletic history, highlighted by 15 SAC championships, nine SAC Tournament titles, and 24 NCAA postseason appearances. He also served as Chair of the South Atlantic Conference Athletic Directors’ Council and on the NCAA Division II Regional Advisory Committee for Football.

Earlier in his career, DeBusk held coaching roles at Furman University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he mentored athletes who advanced to collegiate and professional success - including future NFL Hall of Famer Terrell Owens.

A Greeneville native, DeBusk graduated from Greeneville High School and was a former three-year starting quarterback at Furman University. He led the Paladins to three Southern Conference titles and the 1988 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship. His achievements have earned him induction into the Tusculum University Sports Hall of Fame (2023), Greeneville High School Hall of Fame (2011), Furman University Athletics Hall of Fame (1997).

DeBusk is married to the former Jennifer Coffey, a member of the Bristol Tennessee City Schools Athletic Hall of Fame. Their son Ty currently serves as Assistant Director of Ticketing in the ETSU Athletic Department.
