KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Kingsport City Schools (KCS) students have exceeded the State of Tennessee average scores in all subject areas for end-of-course (EOC) testing during the 2016-17 school year.  In addition, KCS ranks in the top ten among all Tennessee districts in four subject areas.

KCS students ranked 3rd overall in the State in U.S. History, placing 1st in the East region, and were less than one percentage point behind top-ranked Germantown City district. KCS students also ranked 3rd overall in the State in Algebra II, placing 1st in the East region.  Algebra I students ranked 7th and English I students ranked 9th in the State.  English II and Biology students received a ranking of 12th among all districts.

Overall, KCS subject-level performance greatly outpaced the State in all subject areas, with Mathematics, Science and Social Studies topping State averages by more than 20 percentage points.  KCS Social Studies students ranked 3rd State-wide, Mathematics 8th and English/Language Arts 10th.  KCS Science students achieved a 12th place ranking State-wide.

“The preliminary review of the high school EOC data reflects many areas of celebration for the district,” said Dr. Dwain Arnold, Interim Superintendent of Schools for KCS.  “We will continue to analyze the results to identify strengths and areas on which to focus in order to improve Kingsport City Schools instructional practices, strategic planning, and professional learning.”

Kingsport City Schools (KCS) is a public school district located in Kingsport, Tenn., serving students in Sullivan and Hawkins county. KCS has been named the top school district in Tennessee as winner of the 2014 SCORE Prize District Award by the State Collaborative on Reforming Education (SCORE) and has earned the 2014 Achievement Award in the annual Excellence in Tennessee Recognition Program by the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence (TNCPE).
