Capital Construction Projects

For over 100 years, the Kingsport community has positively supported the mission of Kingsport City Schools by ensuring children and adults have the highest quality environments in which to learn, teach, and operate. That focus continues today through strategic efforts to provide the resources necessary so that building and facility improvements are completed in a way the support the goals of KCS.

To better communicate the work being done to improve KCS facilities utilizing public funding, this website is intended to provide information describing capital projects throughout the district.

CURRENT CAPITAL PROJECTS

Jackson Elementary School - Parking Lot Improvements

Robinson Middle School - Gymnasium Floors

Date BOE Funding Approved: March 11, 2025

Approved Project Cost: $140,000

Funding Source: General Purpose School Fund Unreserved Balance

Anticipated Completion Date: Summer 2025

Description: Upgrades to the flooring in the Robinson Gymnasiums, including replacement and painting/finishing of the floor in the Auxiliary Gymnasium and refinishing the floor in the main gymnasium.

Dobyns-Bennett High School - Buck Van Huss Dome Renovation

Date BOE Approved: September 26, 2023

Approved Project Cost: $23,215,000

Funding Source: City of Kingsport Bond Issuance; KCS D-B Renovation Fund

Anticipated Completion Date: March 2025

Description: Renovate gymnasium Lamella roof structure, seating, HVAC, electrical, gym floor, activities office, lobby, entry plaza, rear entrance and parking, scoreboard, and other identified items.

Dobyns-Bennett High School - Nancy Pridemore Theater Renovation

Approved Project Cost: $367,520

Funding Source: FY2023 Schools Capital Improvement Project

Anticipated Completion Date: August 30, 2024

Description: Renovation of the Nancy Pridemore Theater at Dobyns-Bennett High School, including replacement of theater seats, replacement of flooring, painting of walls, updates to balcony railing, and tiling of balcony entry stairway (Alternate #2).

Description: Provide necessary life and safety upgrades to unfinished spaces adjacent to the D-B EXCEL facility, allowing for lab-type use by students during the school day.

Tribe Athletic Complex - Partial Roof Replacement

Funding Source: Sullivan North Renovation Project GP 1733

Anticipated Completion Date: Fall 2024

Description: Replacement of the roof at the Tribe Athletic Complex, covering the gymnasium area (base bid), vocational wing currently occupied by TCAT (Alternate #1), and connecting hallway (Alternate #2). Replacement necessary due to ongoing leaks and end-of-life condition. .
