Based on the work of the Kingsport City Schools Compensation Committee, KCS will implement a new teacher salary scale starting with the 2020-21 School Year. Videos have been prepared to help explain the overall formation and transition process, as well as to provide a detailed explanation of your individual salary situation. Hello I'm Jennifer Guthrie, Chief Human Resources Officer for Kingsport City Schools.  The purpose of this video is to provide you with a brief overview of the new teacher salary scale that will be implemented for the 2020-21 school year. I wanted to start with a brief summary of the discussions that the compensation committee has had over the last couple of years. You will see on this list an overview of some of the big bucket goals that were set by the committee. We met several times in the course of the past two years and identified these as some of the core goals that we wanted to accomplish.  One was removing performance criteria from pay and steps. We will be moving to a multi-lane scale based on degree and years of experience. In doing so, that will remove the performance criteria from the scale. Teachers will advance on the scale consistent with your years of experience. The committee also identified transparency of the scale. Again moving to a multi-lane scale based on degree and years of experience will allow teachers to see exactly what steps they are on each year. We also discussed designated dollar amounts for each step and the ability to receive steps for each year on the scale. You will see in the new scale that there are designated dollar amounts for each step up to 30 years and that teachers will receive some level of step for each year on the scale through 30 years. Another goal that was discussed was to remain competitive. We are fortunate that in Kingsport we have one of the highest pay scales in the state of Tennessee, certainly in our region.  And one of the highest starting salaries for teachers in the state of Tennessee. We wanted to show you some of the comparison scales that we looked at, in particular this is a comparison to the Johnson City scale. We looked at scales from across the state and particularly focused on those in our region to make sure that as we decided steps for the scale, that we would remain competitive. You can see here in this chart how we compare to Johnson City. What's shown in each of those columns is the over/under comparison of the Johnson City steps to the Kingsport City steps on the new scale for each year. You can see in the first several years of the scale in all lanes for all degrees we remain ahead of Johnson City. They begin to catch up as we get to year five and beyond and exceed our salary by a few hundred dollars in that Bachelor and Masters lanes and in particular year 16 and 17 a master's is beginning to exceed us up to $1,000. You will know that you are several thousand dollars behind Johnson City teachers with the same degree and level of experience particularly as you get into mid career.  Then as we begin to get into year 17-18 and beyond we catch up to the Johnson  City scale, surpassing them for the last several years on the scale, particularly in that bachelor's and Master's lane.  You'll note at the bottom of that chart it does show a row for totals and a row for a high-five average. What that is is showing you that if you were to start on our scale for 30 years as a bachelor's or 30 years as a Masters or 30 years as an Ed.S. or 30 years as a doctorate what the total career earnings after 30 years would be compared to Johnson City. So you can see that we exceed in the Bachelors lane by $34,000 over a career, $23,675 in Masters, about $2,900 Ed.S. and Johnson City does exceed us in the doctorate lane. The last row there high five average for retirement purposes you can see that we continue to exceed Johnson City scales for our high five average.  So again, this is just one example Johnson City being our closest competitor in the region, we look closely at that as well as several other scales and those in East Tennessee. We wanted to talk to you for just a minute about the transition process to the new scale. David Frye Chief Financial Officer will be providing three additional videos to explain in more detail how that transition process will work and how steps will work going forward. Just a brief summary of that but in year one 2020-21 we will be placing teachers on the new scale. Teachers will be placed on that scale either at your current rate of pay salary if there is an equivalent salary on that scale. There are some teachers who will move directly over onto the correct year and step consistent with experience in degree with no change in pay whatsoever. There is an equal salary. But for the majority of teachers there is not an equivalent salary so you'll be placed at the next highest step of the new scale. That placement will be consistent with the appropriate lane that represents your degree level. As a result of this placement there will end up being three categories of teachers, those that will be ahead of your actual year of experience.  So that when you are placed on the new scale because it will be the next highest step compared to your current salary, you could end up for example on step seven where perhaps your actual years of experience are five years. So you are ahead of your actual years of experience. The second category will be teachers who will move over exactly on the correct year of experience. As I stated a few minutes ago, some teacher will have an exactly matching step and salary on the new scale. The third category will be those teachers who are behind their actual years of experience. For many teachers your actual salary will place you on a step that is less than your current year of experience. So you may move over to a step 10 where your actual years of experience or 15. You are behind your actual years of experience. So those are three categories that will result. Mr. Frye will be providing videos for each of these categories, again to explain in detail how the transition process will work, how that will impact you, and how we will be making those adjustments over the next few years to move teachers to the step that is consistent with their actual years of experience and degree. Again one of the primary goal of this new scale as set by the compensation committee was to have teachers on a scale that was transparent where everyone could see their actual years of experience and degree represented. So one of the questions that has come up is where do I find my current salary? To make sure that you are looking correctly at the new scale where you are today compared to where you will be placed on the new scale. If you have not already accessed your Skyward account you would go to the Kingsport City Schools website at k12k.com and on the homepage on the far right is the staff link.  You will have a drop-down menu and the second link there is to Skyward. You will need to enter your user ID and password. Once you have entered your account it typically will bring you up to a homepage where it starts with employee information. On the left hand side you will see a menu. Wnder personnel there is a link to assignments .Click on the assignments link and it will open a screen that will show you all of your current assignment for 2019-2020. It will include all assignments, so it will show your teacher assignment and any coaching or extracurricular or stipend assignment that you have. You will want to highlight and click on the teacher assignment for 19-20. If you'll notice small arrow to the left of your teachers assignment.  Keep in mind that in Skyward if you see these arrows, that means there's a drop-down menu. So click on that arrow to the left of the assignment.  It will open a drop-down menu and about the fourth item down says salary information. Again there is a small arrow there to allow for a drop-down menu so click on that small arrow and it will open that will have your current contract amount so that you can see where your current salary is as of today.  That will allow you to look at the new scale and see where your placement would be and then you can access the appropriate video link from Mr. Frye to watch in more detail on how you will be placed and how that will affect your steps in the coming years.
