hello and welcome to the start of the 2021 Kingsport City Schools school year certainly an unusual year when it is a little different than the norm that's not able to have an in-person convocation this year is certainly not the way we would have usually welcome to you or have preferred to welcome hopefully we'll all be able to be back together together at some point in the near future we did want to have a couple of individuals have an opportunity to welcome you to the year the first of those representing our board of education is our board president hello I'm Jim Welch on the president of the Kingsport Board of Education and on behalf of the Board of Education welcome you to the school year trust me when I tell you that I wanted to come and greet you but it's probably not either very special challenges in front of us it's quite frankly it's going to be different difficult and challenging year for each of us no matter what our position is in the city I want you to keep in mind while we are managing for now we are preparing for we're going to have some great successes we're going to have some wonderful Innovations and we're going to make some mistakes we need to keep in mind what these are for the next group of people who have to contend with circumstances such as we are all attending Wheels now I have complete faith and confidence of the staff of the Kingsport City Schools they will continue to work to provide for the maximum potential every child in our system that every grade in every school in every way that they can wear their desk is in the classroom with her desk is at the kitchen table I have confidence that we will do great things in this year I want you to know that from my heart I asked prayers for your peace for release of each of us may have a peaceful and blessed by God bless each and everyone of you thank you thank you mr. Welch it's a sign out one of the reasons why we're really disappointed to not be able to have any person convocation this year was to be able to announce our Kingsport City Schools Hall of Fame inductees for the class mr. Welch has one of those Robinson Middle School for 30 years teaching history social studies coach very pleased to be able to and outdoor community that mr. Jim Welch is a 2020 Hall of Fame along with Miss Joyce Cooper Miss Cooper top for 27 years at Washington Elementary retired in 1987 there were very pleased to be able to announce to you are to Kingsport City Schools Hall of Fame inductees for 2018 Welch and Miss Joyce Cooper now a special message from our superintendent dr. Jeff Morehouse I'm sorry that we're not able to gather for our opening convocation to start off our new year but I still wanted to be able to share with you a mess for a theme for the year to kick this off I wanted to start off by sharing with you one of my favorite books as a kid is if you don't mind I'd like to read that to you right now and it will reference it again later but the book is called Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein what's there was a tree and she loved a little boy and every day the boy would come and he would be gather up her leaves and show me the crowns and play King of the Forest he would climb or trunk and swing from her branches and eat apples and they would play hide and go seek and when he retired he was sleeping or shade and the boy loved the tree very much and the tree was happy but time went by and the boy Grew Older and the tree was often alone the tree in the tree said come come and climb up my trunk and swing for my brain eat my apples and playing in my shea to be happy I'm too big to climb in place at the boy I want to buy things and have fun I want some money can you give me some money I'm sorry said the tree but I have no money I have only leaves and apples take my apples and sell them in the city then you will have money and you will be happy instead of the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her eyeballs and carry them away and the tree was happy but as the boy stayed away for a long time and then the tree was sad and then one day the boy came checking the treeship with joy and said, I want a house to keep me warm he said I want to and I want children in the house give me a house I have no house said the tree the forest is my house but you can cut off my branches and build a house then you will be happy and so the boys could offer branches and carried them away to build his house and the tree was happy but the boys stayed away for a long time and when he came back the tree was so happy she could hardly speak come boys you will come and play I'm too old the place at the boy I want a boat that will take me far away from you can you give me a boat that my trunk and make a boat said the tree then you will you can sail away and be happy and so the boy cut down your trunk and made a boat and the tree was happy but not really and after a long time the boy came back again I'm sorry boy said the tree but I have nothing left to give you my apples are all my teeth are too weak for apples at the boy my branches are argon said the tree you cannot swing on them I'm too old to swing on branches that the boy my trunk is gone said the tree I'm too tired to climb that the boy I'm sorry side the tree I wish I could give you something but I have nothing left I'm just an old stump I'm sorry I don't need very much now just a quiet place to sit and rest I am very tired straighten yourself up as much as you could an old stump is good for singing resting come boy sit down and the boy did and the tree was happy thank you for letting me share that story with you and we'll come back to it here in just a moment but want to share with you a story of when I grew up going up sheroes were a big deal to me I started off with C superheroes I would get up early on Saturday morning and watch cartoons to see Spider-Man in Aquaman As I Grew Older I got into westerns in historical figures I started reading stories about Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett what boy that lives in Tennessee doesn't read those two Jim Bowie in the Alamo Paul Revere and the midnight ride to name just a few as I got older and in the athletic basketball was my Sport and dr.jay was my guy I think I'm starting to show my age now as I look back on those times I recognize that share some common characteristics they were all Ordinary People now that I think about it even the superhero we go around trying to be ordinary when they weren't using their superpowers so I guess we can say that in a certain all of them but what made them Heroes was what they did with the is time to challenge their special traits came to life when everyone else was running why they charged an ordinary people stepping in to create amazing results I recently read a book by Kevin Brown the hero effect in this book A New Concept about heroes that I haven't I would like to share with you today the concept is that the word hero is actually an acronym that describes the traits of the individuals that earned the title a juice to help other with no strings attached individuals that possess the H bring passion and focus on those that they serve they act in ways that cause others they serve wanting more is for exceptional experience for the people they serve individuals that possess the E live life with non-negotiables not focused on conditions but I'm connections and those individuals on moments that matter all are responsible responsible for actions attitudes and results individuals that possess the are twist and that no one else would expect they're focused on improving every day KERO the individuals that possess the is for OptumRx and it is the lands that they do lie it's different than positive thinking are both based on a future that is not happened people that possess 200 choose the most favorite they're comfortable in their own skin and make their own choices about how they're going to show up every day they see things not as they are before how they can be hero you might be thinking okay I like that so how does this apply to me how does this apply to KCs how is dr. Morehouse hi this to the tree I want to take the new definition of a hero and reflect again on the story of The Giving Tree in the story of The Giving Tree we are able to see that the tree was focused on helping the boy without expecting anything in return but to share in the joy of fulfilling and identified the tree providing the exceptional experience each time they were together desire for the boys to keep coming back the tree wasn't focused on the conditions of the situation but on the connections with the boy the tree was responsible for its actions and attitudes and results held itself for standard that no one else would expect the tree gave it all and was a teacher to the boy his entire life the tree operated with the lens of optimism. rather than what it had lost a time to challenging Circumstance the tree stop being an ordinary tree and use this gift in amazing way the tree is a model of what it means to be a hero with this definition in this model I've seen many individuals that have earned the title of hero in my life over the last several months and these times of challenge our community State and Country starting to see that those who possess the special gift a superpower you see not all heroes wear capes some come dress like you and me ordinary people who in time to challenge run in and create extraordinary outcomes this year Armada will be educating is my superpower we ask that is you go through the year that we document our journey using the hashtag h I thought that I have continue to reflect on is that the heroes of my use I've also realized that while they were powerful individually they had impact together in a certain episode of superhero would be about to succumb to the villain that they were trying to face down until the other superheroes arrived just in time the historical figures didn't conquer on the wrong it was only rally the troops together that they they achieve their goal and dr.jay didn't win a title until he had other members added to his team to be able to reach the championship individually to influence together that we have an impact at this time of the year as we start into this school year I know that I'm grateful for the tribe that I belong to and I hope that you are too is my prayer over the coming year as always is that your path be made straight your burden be light and your impact be great as we take on these together as always roll tribe thank you dr. Morehouse for that encouragement for us to be on the lookout and what we do everyday well as we conclude befuddled I'm a little bit obviously this has been an unusual summer in our community and our world let's go back to our convocation last year and enjoy this special presentation of the Dobyns-Bennett Spirit shakers we had a great start to the school year
