Kingsport City Schools Announces 2018 TVAAS Results from TNReady Data

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Education and Kingsport City Schools have released TVAAS results from the 2018 TNReady data, which reflect growth gains in ten subject areas.

The Tennessee Value-Added Assessment System (TVAAS) is a statistical analysis of student assessment data used to measure the impact schools and teachers have on their students' academic growth rate from year-to-year. Using a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 the highest possible score), TVAAS measures student growth, not whether the student is proficient on the state assessment. TVAAS helps educators identify best practices and implement programs that best meet the needs of their students, as well as make informed decisions about where to focus resources to ensure growth opportunities for all students.

2018 TVAAS growth results for the district are:

District-wide Composite score: Level 5
District-wide Literacy and Numeracy score: Level 5
End-Of-Course District-wide Composite score: Level 5
District-wide CTE Students score: Level 5

"This district-wide growth score of 5 is due to the phenomenal high-quality efforts of KCS students and educators," said Superintendent Dr. Jeff Moorhouse. "We believe strongly that all students have a high capacity for learning and growth. These scores reflect our belief that by positively inspiring, cultivating, and impacting our students, great things can be accomplished."

Dobyns-Bennett High School Composite score: Level 5
Jefferson Elementary Composite score: Level 5
Johnson Elementary Composite score: Level 5
Adams Elementary Composite score: Level 5
Washington School-Wide Social Studies: Level 5
Robinson Middle School-Wide Social Studies: Level 5
Sevier Middle School-Wide Social Studies: Level 5

2018 TVAAS End-Of-Course scores in certain subject areas are:

End-Of-Course Algebra I score: Level 5
End-Of-Course Algebra II score: Level 4
End-Of-Course Biology I score: Level 5
End-Of-Course Chemistry score: Level 5
End-Of-Course Geometry score: Level 4
End-Of-Course U.S. History score: Level 5

In Grades 3-8, 2018 TVAAS scores reflect the following:

Grades 3-8 Composite (grade 4) score: Level 5
Grades 3-8 Composite (grade 5) score: Level 5
Grades 3-8 English Language Arts (grade 4) score: Level 5
Grades 3-8 English Language Arts (grade 5) score: Level 5
Grades 3-8 Math (grade 4) score: Level 5
Grades 3-8 Math (grade 6) score: Level 4
Grades 3-8 Science (grade 5) score: Level 5
Grades 3-8 Social Studies (grade 5) score: Level 5
Grades 3-8 Social Studies (grade 6) score: Level 5

TVAAS is one of the many tools provided to districts from the Tennessee Department of Education. Districts and schools are using TVAAS, in conjunction with achievement data, to make sure all students are on the trajectory to proficiency. Utilizing all the data available (growth and achievement), educators are able to make data-informed instructional decisions to ensure the academic growth and achievement of all students.

Kingsport City Schools (KCS) is a public school district located in Kingsport, Tenn., serving students in Sullivan and Hawkins county.
