Literacy

Kingsport offers a high quality literacy curriculum to support readers and scaffold students to comprehend complex texts.  Students receive clear and systematic phonics instruction.  Teachers support students through the gradual release of responsibility model in reading and writing.  Student discussions support children to comprehend and analyze complex texts and tasks.

The files below highlight the standards that are covered in literacy at each grade level.  There are also helpful hints for support at home.  If you have additional questions or concerns regarding the KCS literacy curriculum, please contact Kingsport City Schools Literacy Coordinator, Emily Helphinstine at (423) 378-2150.
