BOE Work Session Notes - August 22, 2023

The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education held a work session on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.  Several important items were discussed, including:
  • The annual KCS bullying report;
  • An update on the renovation of the Buck Van Huss Dome at Dobyns-Bennett High School;
  • A review of Board Policies for potential revision at the Board's September meeting; and
  • A review of Board committee assignments for the 2023-24 year.

As required annually by Tennessee State Law, Jim Nash, Chief Student Services Officer, presented the 2023 bullying report to the Board.
  • The report included a review of district policy regarding bullying and data from the 2022-23 school year.

Dr. Andy True, Assistant Superintendent - Administration, presented an update regarding the state of renovations to the Buck Van Huss Dome at Dobyns-Bennett High School.
  • For the past several months, design work has been occurring in preparation for structural and facility renovation. 
  • Currently, the project is being advertised for bids, with a bid submittal deadline of September 13, 2023.  
  • It is anticipated that a bid will be presented for approval at a special called Board meeting on September 26, 2023.

Dr. True presented several potential Policy updates for review.
  • 1.106 - Code of  Ethics
  • 1.400 - School Board Meetings
  • 1.404 - Public Communication at Board Meetings
  • 3.204 - Threat Assessment Team
 
After tonight's review, the Board will consider formal action on the proposed policies at the September Board meeting.
Melissa Woods, Board President, presented the list of Board committee assignments for the 2023-24 year.
The next session of the Board of Education will be a meeting on Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at 6 p.m.  The meeting will take place in the Tennessee Room of the Administrative Support Center (400 Clinchfield Street).
