The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education held a work session on Tuesday, July 25, 2023. Several important items were discussed, including:
- An update on the summer learning programs that took place during June;
- A report on KCS safety-related topics; and
- A review of potential Policy updates for consideration at the August BOE meeting.
Michael Hubbard, Director of Performance Excellence, Dr. Jennifer Pangle, Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Specialist, and Dr. Rhonda Stringham, Assistant Superintendent - Instruction, provided a report on the summer learning programs that took place during June 2023.
- The report included a review of intervention and support programs which included data on enrollment and curriculum, as well as information related to the new 3rd grade reading law.

Jim Nash, Chief Student Services Officer, presented a report on KCS safety-related topics, including:
- The KCS Safety Task Force.
- New state safety requirements and drills.
- KCS Safety Day with school administrators.
- New state law regarding school entrances.
- 2023-24 KCS SRO status.
- KCS safety process regarding threat of violence or weapons.
- KCS process related to vaping and THC edibles.
- KCS Safety Assessments.
- Public School Security Grant and Safe School Funds.

Dr. Andy True, Assistant Superintendent - Administration, presented several potential Policy updates for review.

- After tonight's review, the Board will consider formal action on first reading at the August BOE meeting.
The next session of the Board of Education will be a meeting on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Tennessee Room of the Administrative Support Center (400 Clinchfield Street).
