The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education held a work session on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. Several important items were discussed, including:
- Introduction of several potential Board Policy revisions; and
- An End-of-Year update from Superintendent Dr. Chris Hampton.
Dr. Andy True, Assistant Superintendent - Administration, presented several potential Board Policy revisions for initial consideration, as well as an overview of potential Policy work to take place during the 2024-25 school year.
- Based on the annual review of new and/or revisions to Tennessee state law during the 2024 legislative session, the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) has recommended a variety of changes to the KCS Policy Manual to conform to these new laws.
- Like many school districts in Tennessee, KCS utilizes the TSBA policy service to monitor for necessary changes, as well as to provide model policy language crafted by the TSBA legal department.
- As an initial review this evening, nine potential Policy actions were discussed. This served as the first grouping of potential Policy revisions for 2024-25, addressing those needing the most immediate attention (due to importance or needed timeliness).
- 1.108 - Nepotism (revised)
- 1.501 - Visitors to Schools (revised)
- 2.403 - Surplus Property Sales (revised)
- 2.601 - Fundraising Activities (revised)
- 3.205 - Security (revised)
- 3.500 - Food Service Management (revised)
- 4.214 - Use of Artificial Intelligence Programs (new)
- 4.403 - Library Materials (revised)
- 6.409 - Child Abuse and Neglect (revised)
- After discussing each item this evening, the Board will consider each on first reading at its August business meeting.
Superintendent Dr. Chris Hampton provided an End-of-Year update to the Board.

The next session of the Board of Education will be a meeting on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 6 p.m. The meeting will take place in the Tennessee Room of the Administrative Support Center (400 Clinchfield Street).
