BOE Work Session Notes - June 28, 2022

The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education held a work session on Tuesday, June 28, 2022. One set of items was discussed:
  • Review of Board Policy considerations.

Dr. Andy True, Assistant Superintendent - Administration, provided a review of potential Board Policy actions to be considered at the July Board meeting.  Dr. Rhonda Stringham, Assistant Superintendent - Instruction, provided information regarding policies related to curriculum and instruction.
  • A general review of the policy creation/revision process was discussed, including an overview of upcoming Policy presentations in the coming months.
  • The Tennessee School Boards Association supports KCS by providing policy services such as legal review and consult, notification of required policy revisions, draft policy creation, and an annual KCS Policy audit.
  • The majority of recommended policy revisions/creations are due to requirements in Tennessee Code Annotated and State Board of Education Policy.
  • Policies reviewed this evening for potential future action included:
    • 3.500 - Food Service Management (Revised)
    • 4.101 - Instructional Standards (New)
    • 4.205 - Enrollment in College Level Courses (Revised)
    • 4.212 - Virtual Education Program (New)
    • 4.301 - Interscholastic Athletics (Revised)
    • 4.402 - Reconsideration of Textbook and Instructional Materials (New)
    • 4.403 - Library Materials (New)
    • 4.406 - Use of the Internet (Revised)
    • 4.600 - Grading System (Revised)
    • 5.119 - Employment of Retirees (New)
    • 5.201 - Separation Practices for Non-Tenured Teachers (Revised)
    • 6.409 - Child Abuse and Neglect (Revised)
  • Following the review of the previous Policy items, the Board held a discussion regarding the KCS Policy on bullying (6.304 - Student Discrimination, Harassment, Bullying, Cyber-bullying and Intimidation).  The discussion reflected the desire that bullying is addressed in an effective, consistent fashion in KCS schools. 
The next meeting of the Board of Education will be on Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at 6 p.m.  The meeting will take place in the Tennessee Room of the Administrative Support Center (400 Clinchfield Street).
