BOE Work Session Notes - February 8, 2022

The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education held a work session on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. Several key items were discussed, including:
  • A report on KCS Career and Technical Education programs;
  • KCS Capital Budget planning;
  • Residential growth in Kingsport and its potential impact on KCS; and
  • The 2022-23 KCS Budget.

Tonight's Work Session began with a report on KCS Career and Technical Education programming.
  • Dobyns-Bennett High School Work-Based Learning Coordinator, Mrs. Claire Arbaugh, and D-B Math teacher, Mr. Bryan Kerns, provided a report in recognition of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month.  
  • The report reviewed the growing and wide variety of CTE and work-based learning opportunities available to KCS students.
  • Dr. Bo Shadden is the Director of CTE at Dobyns-Bennett.

Mr. David Frye, Chief Finance Officer, Mr. Jim Nash, Chief Student Services Officer, and Dr. Andy True, Assistant Superintendent - Administration, shared a variety of information related to KCS Capital project estimates, enrollment, and budget.
  • The discussion reviewed topics such as anticipated capital project needs over the next 10 years, residential expansion in Kingsport and its potential impact on KCS enrollment and facilities needs, and potential financial discussions necessary to meet long-term needs and goals.
  • Reflections on the KCS budget process included the need to prioritize items such as classified pay, security and facilities needs, and student/counseling supports.
The next meeting of the Board of Education will be on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at 6 p.m.  The meeting will take place in the Tennessee Room of the Administrative Support Center (400 Clinchfield Street).
