BOE Meeting Notes - November 10, 2020

The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, November 10, 2020.  Several key items were discussed, including:
  • A community interest report on KCS early childhood learning programs; and 
  • A report on the new KCS student information system and parent access.

CALL TO ORDER

The Pledge of Allegiance was led this evening by Conner and Reese Carpenter, students at Jackson Elementary School.  Conner is in the 4th grade and Reese is in the 2nd grade.

Community Interest Report

A report was presented to the Board by Dr. Amy Doran, Coordinator of Early Childhood Programs. 
  • Programs are provided for children from age six weeks through five years old.
  • Early Childhood Learning Centers are located at Adams Elementary, Washington Elementary, and the Palmer Center.
  • KCS Voluntary Pre-K programs are located at Jackson Elementary, Johnson Elementary, Kennedy Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Roosevelt Elementary, the Palmer Center, and V.O. Dobbins.
  • Early intervention programs are located at Johnson Elementary and the Palmer Center.

REPORTS

 
Michel Hubbard, Director of Performance Excellence, and Becky Clark, Coordinator of Student Information Services, shared an overview of the new Aspen Family Portal with the Board.
  • Aspen is the new student information system utilized by KCS beginning this year.  Aspen replaced PowerSchool at the start of this school year. 
  • Mr. Hubbard reviewed features and details regarding the new access portal, which is expected to roll out to parents next week.
    • Parents will receive notification through Aspen regarding how to access their portal.
The next meeting of the Board of Education will be a work session on Tuesday, November 24, 2020 at 6 p.m.  The meetings will take place in the Tennessee Room of the Administrative Support Center (400 Clinchfield Street).
